Testimonials
14th May 2007

Patient X is currently an obstetric patient under my care expecting her third baby.  She is now 36 weeks gestation.  During her last pregnancy she developed severe symphysis pubis diastasis.  This necessitated her being on crutches for the last four months of the pregnancy and she was severely debilitated.  She has been attending Ms. Mags Clark-Smith for treatment consisting of "Body Centering Pilates".  This has had a remarkable effect and she has been normal through this pregnancy.

I am writing this letter to report this treatment is an essential medical intervention.

"Body Centering Pilates is extremely helpful for pregnant women, enabling them to strengthen and ready the muscles for labour.

As a nurse and midwife, I find Body Centering Pilates can significantly benefit a patient's life, in enhancing both the physical and mental wellbeing.

Following birth and any surgery, it is important for the patient to both breathe properly and move correctly.  In my experience Body Centering Pilates enables patients to gain a confidence in their movement, thereby helping muscle tone and relaxation."

"Pilates is an excellent form of exercise when adapted appropriately for specific stages of pregnancy. It addresses the postural changes and muscle imbalances that develop through the dynamic stages of pregnancy with the growth of the baby. Good alignment and muscle control can be maintained in conjunction with relaxed breathing and body awareness. I would regularly recommend that women attend 'Pilates in Pregnancy' classes with a qualified Body Control Pilates instructor to maintain mobility and feel healthy during their pregnancy."

"Pilates has played an invaluable and integral part in my work in rehabilitating pre and post natal clients as a chartered physiotherapist. As a pilates instructor and mother, pilates has been of great benefit in improving my core strength and posture during pregnancy and also in regaining my figure and tone post pregnancy."

Pilates & Pregnancy

Body Centering Pilates will help to make you physically fit for pregnancy and labour.  The exercises, heightened body awareness and the calm approach will enable you to enjoy your pregnancy and speed your return to full activity after the birth.  Body Centering Pilates focuses on good alignment and balanced muscle recruitment, this strengthens the deep core muscles and improves joint stability.  It acts as a counter balance to the natural instability caused by hormone changes which prepare the body for birth.

Body Centering Pilates strenghtens the pelvic floor which carries the weight of the baby as it grows.  Improved strength, flexibility and posture will ensure that back ache and joint pain are minimal.  Body Centering Pilates promotes the good function of circulation, respiration, organs, nervous and digestive systems.

Body Centering Pilates will create the foundation for the body to continue in good health after the baby is born.   It is not advised to practise Pilates until 6 weeks after the birth.  However, that foundation will have prepared the body for infant care, including breast feeding if that is your choice.

It is recommended that you check with your Doctor before starting Pilates. If you are new to Pilates wait until your pregnancy is 16 weeks before you start.  If you are using Mags Clark-Smith's Body Centering Pilates DVD, we recommend an individual session with a Body Control Pilates Teacher after you have mastered the fundamentals.

It is important to limit the time on your back to a few minutes as the pregnancy advances, three minutes is plenty in your second and third trimesters.  By the second trimester the prone exercises, that is lying on your front will be impossible!  Skip these and look forward to trying them after the birth.

Ask your Body Control Pilates teacher if they have attended a specialist Pilates and Pregnancy course.  They will advise you if any
exercises are inappropriate for you.
